Jump to Recipe

Love, love, love the combination of flavors of this Avocado, Sweet Potato and Spinach baby puree’ appropriate for little ones starting from 6 months of age. This recipe is a great first food one, loaded with nutrients. Every ingredient is a superhero one, providing important elements for your baby’s growth.

Let’s start from the recipe and then I will give you a bit more nutritional information and details.

We will need to steam the sweet potatoes first. Easy. Peel the potatoes, chop them in 2 inches cubes and steam for 15 minutes. For the recipe you will need 1 cup of steamed sweet potato cubes that corresponds to a medium sweet potato.

After steaming the sweet potato, turn the heat off, open the lid of the steamer and add the spinach on top, close the lid again and let the spinach gently cook for 5 minutes. You do not want to overcook the spinach, just delicately steam for few minutes.

Transfer sweet potato and spinach in a tall container, add the avocado and hemp seeds.

Add also 4 tablespoons of warm water to thin the puree’.

Using an immersion blender transform the ingredients into a smooth cream.

Serve warm or at room temperature. You did it! Easy, isn’t it?

HOW TO STORE LEFTOVERS

You can store any leftover in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Do not worry if the puree turns brownish, it’s the avocado oxidation. A totally natural process that does not effect the nutritional value of the avocado, just the color.

CAN I THIN THE BABY PUREE WITH BREASTMILK OR BABY FORMULA?

Sure! I used 4 tablespoons of warm water to thin the baby puree but if you have extra breastmilk or baby formula available you can use that. It will be like adding some gold 🙂

WHY ADDING HEMP SEEDS?

I love adding hemps seeds in my recipes, they add extra nutrients. From a nutritional point of view they provide Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids (to support brain development). They offer a good amount of protein all together with fiber, Vitamin A, B6, zinc and copper. Nutritionally powerful I would say!

On top of the great nutritional value, hemp seeds help with constipation. Yep! If your little one needs some help with bowel movements, a teaspoon of hemp seeds sprinkled on his/her food every day helps!

WHY USING SWEET POTATO AND NOT REGULAR POTATO?

Yes, they are both potatoes, but sweet potatoes and regular ones differ in many ways: they come from different plant families, they have different nutritional values and of course they taste different.

From a baby food point of view sweet potatoes have a creamy texture and a sweet natural taste that is great for little ones. Regular potatoes are creamy but with a bland flavor. From a nutritional point of view sweet potatoes outdo regular ones as they have higher Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and potassium levels. They are indeed a dense food, perfect for babies!

AVOCADO AND SPINACH: BABY FOOD HEROES!

Two of the most nutritious and important foods in a baby/kid diet. Avocado can really be considered an almost perfect fruit: it has it all 🙂

It provides carbohydrates, healthy fats, Vitamin K, folate, Vitamin C and of course fiber. Avocados do not contain any cholesterol or sodium and are low in saturated fat.

Spinach on the other side have a very well known amount of iron, an essential element for your little one’s whole body functioning.
