Banana roll-ups

When Luca comes back to school still hungry, the banana roll-ups are a perfect very nutritious and healthy after school snack that gives him the energy to keep running and enjoying the rest of the afternoon. The recipe is super easy and ready in 5 minutes. The concept is simple: a thin slice of bread with a generous layer of sweet spread on it, topped by a kind of your choice of seeds/cereals and a ripe banana to be rolled up in. You will obtain a long cylinder that you will slice in bite size rolls. That’s how easy the recipe is 😉

The beautiful thing about this recipe is that you can really personalize the main ingredients following your kids’ taste and what you have available in the pantry!

I used: organic white flour tortilla + homemade hazelnut spread + oats + banana.

BREAD: any kind of flat bread will work. The round shape tortilla works very well (in Italian we call them Piadine), the pita bread is fine too. Just remember that the bread needs to be rolled, so it should be moist enough not to break while rolling. You choose the kind of flour: white, whole wheat, multigrain.

SPREAD: my kids really really like the homemade hazelnut spread that I prepare (check the recipe here!!) but any kind of healthy spread will be fine: peanut butter, almond butter, fruit jam, Vegemite for the NZ & Australia friends ;-), apple butter, apple sauce….

SEEDS & CEREALS: that’s an addition that I really suggest not only because they are healthy for your kids but also because of the nice texture that they will give to the rolls. I had oats in my pantry, but you can choose chia seeds, sesame seeds, crushed pistachios, crushed nuts (if there are no allergy issues).

BANANA: the queen of this recipe 😉 It has to be ripe (intense yellow color with some brown spots here and there, not green). It’s sweeter and creamier. Without mentioning the amazing properties of potassium that’s in the banana.


Banana roll-ups
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 Tbsp homemade hazelnut spread
  • 1 Tbsp oats
  • 1 flour tortilla
  1. Spread the hazelnut spread on the flour tortilla
  2. Sprinkle some oats on top
  3. Place the peeled banana on the top end of the tortilla and roll it
  4. Slice the roll in one inch bite size rolls. Enjoy!
