Pineapple Frozen Drops – baby cough remedy +6M

Unfortunately the cold/cough/sore throat season just started and no matter how healthy I try to feed the kids and the rest of the family, soon or later somebody gets sick 🙁

The worse thing about seasonal viruses is that there is not a magic medicine that brings energy back in no time…it takes days to recover and a lot of patience. Still, there are so many natural remedies that you can use to relieve the symptoms and speed up the recovery 😉

When it comes to cough and sore throat I usually prepare for the kids and myself a special smoothie with pineapple + kiwi + turmeric + lemon + ginger. It only takes 10 minutes to prepare between prepping the ingredients and throwing them in the blender, not bad at all! Inspired by the sore throat smoothie recipe I decided to play a little and prepare something baby friendly (appropriate starting from 6 months!!) + fun + ready to use when needed in no time. I ended up with these super cute frozen teddy bears that you can keep in the freezer, ready to come to the rescue when needed!

Even if the recipe has been designed for babies…my whole family has been enjoying the frozen pineapple bears last week when we were all under the weather 😉

Here you are some interesting facts behind the ingredients’ selection, why I chose this particular mix:

Pineapple to relieve coughing and mucus thanks to the bromelain enzyme in it which is a natural anti-inflammatory. Pineapple is also high in Vitamin C that helps to increase the production of antibodies and white blood cells which helps to fight the infection.

Lemon to relieve congestion and keep the mucus thin. Citruses protect the body from cell damage and boost the immune system.

Turmeric has well known antiseptic properties that fight cough and cold.

Kiwi to help fighting infections. Kiwis are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, potassium

Banana…ok, the banana doesn’t help to relieve cough or cold…but we need to give some natural sweetness and creaminess to our smoothie or it will be too acidic for our little ones 😉

You might be also interested in knowing which foods to avoid when you or your kids have cold/cough:

  • Dairy products (breastmilk and baby formula excluded as they are the main nutrients for babies under 12 months)
  • Sweetened drinks like juices
  • Dry fruits and nuts
  • Sweets
  • Spicy and oily foods

To prepare the frozen bears/drops you simply need to make a smoothie adding all the ingredients in a blender to obtain a smooth consistency. I suggest to try both the pineapple and the kiwi first to check the sweetness!!

Once prepared the smoothie you have few options:

1- enjoy the smoothie like it is 🙂

2- fill a gummy bears mold with the smoothie and freeze it for few hours

3- using a teaspoon create as many smoothie drops as you can on a parchment paper and freeze it. you will not need the mold 🙂

Note:

This recipe is an all-natural homemade remedy that helps relieving the cold/cough/sore throat symptoms, but it is not a medicine. Consult with your pediatrician if symptoms persist and for medical advice.

Are these safe for a 7-8 month old? I’m afraid they might be a choking hazard?

Super safe, they will start melting from the moment you will take them out of the freezer 🙂 The size is so small that they will transform into a cold puree as soon as in your baby’s mouth. Let me know if your baby likes them! ciao, b

Sent this recipe to a girlfriend that loves home remedies. She made for her 2 girls (5 & 2) and they loved it. The 2 year old, also felt much better after! So I was motivated to make some for my daughter (1), who has a runny nose. Will give to her tonight with dinner. I don’t have any molds, but put the smoothie in a ketchup/mustard squeeze bottle to easily squirt dots onto the parchment. Made a whole bunch and still had some left over to drink!

These look so cute! A great alternative to try instead of store-bought cough medicines, thank you! My 10 month old is well atm but I’m sure he’s bound to pick up some germs sometime soon 🙂 My partner is Italian and I am British so I can identify with your family! My partner is always telling Raffaele that he’s going to have some ‘pappa’ and he gets really excited hihi 🙂

Thanks for the lovely recipes and videos. Ciao!

Ciao Laura!! I’m so glad you liked the recipe and that your little Raffaele can enjoy some Italian recipes 😉
My kids are older now (4 and 7) but I still tell them “la pappa e’ pronta!” when it’s dinner time, hi hi!

I usually give them to the kids frozen as the cold helps too relieving the sore throat. That being said, you can serve the puree’ room temperature too 🙂

Hi! You can substitute the banana with mango, peaches, apricots. Any fruit with a dense pulp will work 🙂

      Thanks!
The drops do not have any side effect, you can offer them as needed. I would suggest one or two drops every other hour to relief the cold/cough symptoms. I hope your little one will feel better soon! Thank you, B
