Homemade Buckwheat flour

Buckwheat is not a grain and it is not wheat, but a simple fruit seed and it is naturally gluten free, that’s why buckwheat flour is perfect for very first baby puree’ from 6/7 months of age.

From a nutritional point of view buckwheat is high in fiber and is a very good source of Iron, niacin, folate, vitamin K: all very good for a baby’s diet.

Unroasted buckwheat has a soft, subtle flavor, while the roasted one has a more earthy and nutty taste. Also, buckwheat seeds have a natural unique triangular shape.

Another name for Buckwheat is Kasha (roasted buckwheat) or Saracen Corn, so when you are looking for it in a grocery store either in the form of grain or flour, look for all names.

Sometimes it is not easy to find buckwheat flout at the grocery store, or it is more expensive compared to the seeds. My suggestion is to prepare buckwheat flour at home. It is insanely easy and cheaper!!

Do I have to cook or soak the buckwheat before I blend or put them in raw?

Very good question! if we consider that Soba Noodles are made with buckwheat flour + all purpose flour + water, the reply is “why not?”. Grinding soba noodles may be a quick acceptable solution to make buckwheat flour at home if you do not have other alternatives 😉
I have to admit that I’m curious to check the consistency of the final result 🙂

This is great! I can’t wait to try it. For the sake of planning ahead, does the one cup of seeds yield one cup of flour? And do you happen to know about how many cups are in a pound of the seeds?

Hi! One cup of seeds should make more than one cup of flour, more or less one and an half.
One pound of seeds should be anything between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 cups. I hope it helps!! Ciao, b

Yes you can! The taste will be lighter and less intense than using the kasha.
