Buckwheat pear and zucchini baby puree

Buckwheat is fun for more than one reason. The names tricks you as you can think it is a cereal or a grain, but it is none of that. It’s a fruit seed (like quinoa) and more nutritious of a regular seed. Being gluten free it is far less likely to provoke allergies and this makes it a perfect superfood for babies starting from 6/7 months.

From a nutritional point of view buckwheat is high in fiber and contains Iron, Niacin, Folate and even Vitamin K (not bad!!) Because of its protein content it is lower on the glycaemic scale compared to rice, corn or wheat. Buckwheat is high in important proteins and amino acids. From a cooking point of view buckwheat flour cooks very quickly and it can be used as any other baby cereal to prepare baby food in few minutes 🙂 It also has a very interesting nutty earthy taste that goes well with a lot of recipes.

Being a great choice for homemade baby food I would like to share this simple recipe with you: buckwheat flour with zucchini, pears and ricotta cheese. A tasty and balanced meal for your little ones.

This is all you will need:

And that’s how to proceed:

– Cut the zucchini and the pear in small pieces

– Steam the zucchini and the pear for 6 minutes

– In a medium sauce pan add 1/2 cup of the residual water from the steamer (it contains good nutrients that have been released from the zucchini and the pear!!!) and 1 Tbsp of buckwheat flour. I love all your recipes, I am mother of 3 and had twins 7 years ago. I had a lot of stress and 50% of the time, I bought my kids baby food and 50% prepared it by boiling veggies and meat in a big pot. I wish I would have seen you tube back then. I have followed three of you recipes and viewed more I plan to follow. I have a 6 month old now and love the simplicity and tastiness of your recipes!! I love the chicken apples and rice recipe and the semolina carrot fennel soup. I have invested in an immersion blender and use my steamer like never before. Love your tips and I hope you put more recipes for babies and adults. Thanks, mom of 3:)

Hi Sharon! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching BuonaPappa!! Wow, with twins you must have been very very busy. You have all my admiration. I only have two and I have to admit that Alex (the younger) is luckier when it comes to food as I practiced a lot with Luca (my older) and now it comes very natural to me to prepare healthy and balanced kid friendly meals for him. Cooking is a never ending learning process, there is always something new to discover 😉 Ciao!!! b

At what age you can serve this puree for the baby? My son is approaching 6 months and I was thinking of trying this puree. Thank you.

Hi! this puree is a lovely first food idea. You can serve it starting from 6 months. It is naturally gluten free, a bit easier to digest compared to other gluten options. Another idea for a first food is a simple and delicious homemade apple sauce, that’s what I offered to both my kids at the very beginning. Let me know if you have any question!!! ciao! b

Hi! Good question. Yes, the puree’ can be stored in the freezer for up to 3-4 months. You can thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and warm it up in the microwave or on the stove before serving it. Ciao, b
